Dr. Alexander prescribes Thornton Adjustable Positioners (TAP) for the treatment of sleep apnea and snoring. The TAP appliance works on the same principle as CPR. The TAP is designed to keep the airway of the throat open and to allow air to pass. A constricted or collapsed airway causes snoring or sleep apnea. The TAP appliance holds the lower jaw in a forward position, maintaining a clear airway to reduce snoring and improve breathing. When the jaw opens and the tongue falls into the back of the throat, the airway narrows forcing air through the small opening. This creates a vibration known as snoring. Although snoring seems harmless, it can be a "red flag" for a more serious condition called sleep apnea. Dr. Alexander has personally worn a TAP appliance for years.
